How custom urethane form liners cast Route 66's iconic shield directly into Tulsa's I-244 corridor — turning a highway rehabilitation into a permanent tribute to the Mother Road.
The I-244 corridor carries roughly 74,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Tulsa, running straight through the historic path of Route 66. By the early 2020s the highway surface and its aging bridges were overdue for a full rehabilitation — but ODOT saw an opportunity to do more than repave.
With Route 66's 2026 centennial approaching, the design called for a retaining wall solution that could survive the punishment of a high-traffic interstate while delivering a high-finish aesthetic worthy of the road's legacy. The challenge: honor a century of American highway history in a surface durable enough to stand maintenance-free for decades.
That meant translating the instantly recognizable Route 66 shield — and a timeless stone-masonry texture — into cast-in-place concrete precise enough to read cleanly at highway speed, and repeatable across an entire corridor of pours.
From shield geometry to finished wall, Spec Formliners engineered a custom multi-part liner system and worked alongside the precast and construction team to hold the Route 66 branding crisp across every pour.
Coordination with ODOT and Sherwood Construction to lock the Ashlar Stone Block field pattern and set the Route 66 shield to repeat every 170 feet along the corridor.
High-strength, reusable urethane specified for sharp stone-joint relief and crisp Route 66 typography — durable enough to hold detail across multiple pours in the field.
Custom #1515 Ashlar liners and a multi-part shield liner system fabricated for consistent pattern reproduction and precise registration across the full length of wall.
Cast-in-place placement with McPherson Concrete / Geoquest, with QC ensuring shield alignment and stone-joint continuity held true from panel to panel.
Custom #1515 Ashlar Stone Block pattern cast across the corridor's retaining walls, giving high-traffic infrastructure the rugged, timeless feel of hand-laid masonry.
Large-scale Route 66 shields cast directly into the concrete every 170 feet using a custom multi-part urethane liner system — a permanent, maintenance-free tribute.
Pattern and shield registration engineered for cast-in-place pours, holding crisp typography and stone-joint relief consistent panel after panel at highway speed.
The I-244 corridor proves that a routine rehabilitation can double as placemaking — connecting 74,000 daily drivers to a century of Route 66 heritage without adding a maintenance burden.
Route 66's iconic shield is now cast permanently into the corridor — a lasting tribute timed to the route's 2026 centennial.
Cast-in urethane texture replaces paint and murals that fade — the branding is structural, not applied, and needs no upkeep.
Functional retaining walls became a gateway to Oklahoma's Route 66 legacy, giving the corridor a distinct civic identity.
Crisp shields and sharp stone-joint relief stay readable at 70 mph, holding consistent across every pour along the route.
Custom form liners for DOT infrastructure, retaining walls, sound barriers, and cultural tributes cast directly into concrete. Any pattern. Any scale. Built to perform — and to tell a story — for decades.
