Closing the Loop – the recycling of spec’s plastic

At Spec Formliners, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword. It’s baked into our process. That’s why all of our plastic formliners are 100% recyclable, and we’re proud to be part of a full-circle system that reduces waste and gives our materials a second life.

Let’s Talk Lifecycle

Here’s how it works:

Formliner is used on-site

Our plastic formliners go to work creating high-impact architectural textures on cast-in-place and precast concrete structures.

Recycling at the jobsite

Per EPA and most state regulations, job sites are required to have a recycling container on-site. These bins should be used to collect post-project plastic formliners instead of sending them to landfills.

Back to base

Recycled formliners are collected and sent to a certified plastic processor.

Breakdown process

The plastic is sorted, cleaned, and then melted down into raw plastic pellets.

Rebirth as sheet stock

These pellets are reformed into fresh plastic sheets, the exact sheets we use every day to manufacture new Spec Formliners. Even during our own production, we collect every plastic trimming and send it back to our supplier to be reprocessed, ensuring zero scrap goes to waste.

From Jobsite to Workshop: A Material Mission

Every contractor who recycles with us is contributing to something bigger than their individual project. They’re part of a growing movement in construction… one that values longevity, not just in concrete, but in our responsibility to the planet.

Too often in this industry, sustainability is an afterthought. We’re flipping that script.

When we talk about “form with function,” we mean it at every level. Not only do our textures shape the built environment, they help shape a better materials economy. This is about more than compliance; it’s about leadership. And it starts with a simple act: tossing that used formliner in the right bin.

So next time you’re on site, remember this: every recycled sheet tells a story. The next form you set might just be made from the last one you removed.

Why It Matters

Let’s be real. Construction is a resource-heavy industry. But steps like this create real impact. By recycling our own products, we’re reducing raw material demand, decreasing carbon output, and giving our customers a clear path to greener building practices.

And the best part? No compromise on quality. Our recycled sheet stock meets the same performance standards and texture precision as virgin material.

If you’re working with Spec Formliners, you’re not just building beautiful surfaces. You’re helping build a circular economy.
