The Challenge

Where Modern Infrastructure Meets the Mother Road

The I-244 corridor carries roughly 74,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Tulsa, running straight through the historic path of Route 66. By the early 2020s the highway surface and its aging bridges were overdue for a full rehabilitation — but ODOT saw an opportunity to do more than repave.

With Route 66's 2026 centennial approaching, the design called for a retaining wall solution that could survive the punishment of a high-traffic interstate while delivering a high-finish aesthetic worthy of the road's legacy. The challenge: honor a century of American highway history in a surface durable enough to stand maintenance-free for decades.

That meant translating the instantly recognizable Route 66 shield — and a timeless stone-masonry texture — into cast-in-place concrete precise enough to read cleanly at highway speed, and repeatable across an entire corridor of pours.

How It Was Made

The Process

From shield geometry to finished wall, Spec Formliners engineered a custom multi-part liner system and worked alongside the precast and construction team to hold the Route 66 branding crisp across every pour.

Coordination with ODOT and Sherwood Construction to lock the Ashlar Stone Block field pattern and set the Route 66 shield to repeat every 170 feet along the corridor.
