From a $72 million LEED Gold college gateway in East Hollywood to a Route 66 centennial tribute in Tulsa β two projects where formliners do more than texture concrete.
The LACC Cesar Chavez Administration and Workforce Building is a $72 million gateway for Los Angeles City College β designed to greet thousands of students and faculty daily while achieving LEED Gold sustainability standards. Led by McCarthy Building Companies and designed by Steinberg Hart, the project required a facade that could bridge the campus's historic architectural character with a forward-looking contemporary design. Spec Formliners provided a custom-engineered Wave/Flute pattern that introduces a subtle vertical rhythm to the four-story cast-in-place exterior β bold enough to define the building's silhouette from a distance, yet restrained enough to feel intentional at the pedestrian level. Feedback from the field has been exceptional, with McCarthy noting the finish is setting this project apart.
"When texture is handled correctly, it becomes a signature feature of the build β the Wave/Flute finish is setting this project apart from the competition."
In Tulsa, Oklahoma, modern infrastructure meets the historic Mother Road. The I-244 Pavement and Bridge Rehabilitation project is a tribute to the legacy of Route 66 β integrating the road's iconic branding directly into the structural fabric of Tulsa's transportation network. Spec Formliners provided custom urethane liners to create a seamless historic stone aesthetic along the corridor, using Ashlar Stone Block pattern #1515 for rugged, timeless texture across the retaining walls. Every 170 feet, large-scale Route 66 shields were cast directly into the concrete using our multi-part liner system β a permanent, maintenance-free tribute recognizable at highway speeds. High-strength reusable urethane was the critical material choice, ensuring sharp stone joint relief and crisp Route 66 typography held consistent across every pour.
"Formliners are more than just molds β they are tools for placemaking. By integrating site-specific history into the walls, this infrastructure serves as a gateway to the rich legacy of Oklahoma."
